For those of you who are serious about your ice cream (and who isn’t?) there’s only one name - one short and memorable syllable - that embodies what we all scream for. Zsa’s (pronounced Za’s) Ice Cream is all natural homemade goodness in flavors that even make your childhood memories taste better.
“Our flavors are straightforward and approachable,” says Danielle Jowdy, founder of Zsa’s Ice Cream. “We are inspired by the treats we ate as children, only we make them better.”
Living up to Zsa’s tagline “Seriously from Scratch”, Jowdy and her staff make everything themselves, from the ice cream to the baked goods and other fresh ingredients that get mixed in such as chocolate wafers, crispy streusel, and roasted strawberries and peaches.
“We look for recipes that have a good texture and will stay flavorful and pair really well with milk and cream,” Jowdy says.
One of the most popular flavors so far is Black Magic. Pieces of Black Magic Chocolate Cake, from an old family recipe, are folded into Zsa’s Coffee Ice Cream flavored with Valley Green Coffee’s Devil’s Pool Blend. A summertime favorite is Buttered Brown Sugar Peach and, new this year, an ice cream sandwich based on drumstick cones.
Zsa’s Ice Cream began as a hobby and blossomed into a full-blown business, which Jowdy runs with her partner, Parker Whitehead. It received its unique name from a nickname that Jowdy and her sister, Rebecca, used to call each other when they were young. A textile designer by trade, Jowdy transitioned smoothly into entrepreneur and business owner based on her upbringing.
“My parents each owned small businesses for many years,” she says. “Nine-to-five never existed in our house.”
In 2013, as a surprise for Jowdy, Whitehead purchased their first ice cream truck, a 1963 International Harvester named Gatsby. The company now operates two trucks, which are used for private events and corporate functions as well as large street festivals. Zsa’s will also be a regular on the streets of Manayunk on Fridays and Saturdays this summer.
But there’s no need for a Food Truck App to locate some Zsa’s for your self. You can purchase Zsa’s ice cream locally at Doylestown Food Market and in a variety of other large and small whole food markets throughout the area and in Philadelphia. Jowdy will also be at the Headhouse Farmer’s Market on Lombard Street in Philadelphia.
Stop by the Doylestown Food Market for a Zsa’s tasting at our Fun First Friday event from 5 to 7pm on June 5.
