We’re all about our farmers and local!
If we had to choose just one word to sum up what we’re all about at the Doylestown Food Market it would be “local.”
Do we care about other things, like bringing nutritious, fresh, season-appropriate food to our community in one convenient store? Of course!
But our local farmers and small business people are where it all starts and ends for us. Our mission is to provide easy access to locally raised and produced foods for a number of reasons. First, it allows us to tell you exactly where the food came from and how it was grown. We’re proud of our ability to know the story of our foods, from the farm to the market. Second, it allows us to influence and support the local economy isn a positive way. When local farmers and small producers flourish, so does the community. We take this role very seriously. Farmland throughout the U.S. is disappearing at an alarming rate.
Just within a 100-mile radius of our cooperative store in Doylestown, there are at least 20 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland where high-quality farmland is under severe development pressure. This is a worrying trend, and The Doylestown Food Market wants to help reverse course. You can help too, simply by shopping with us. On any given day, the store has produce, meat, eggs, dairy, beauty and cleaning supplies, and much more from over 100 local farmers and business people. Think of it as a win-win; you’re helping sustain the local economy AND choosing a healthier lifestyle. Want to know more about our many, many farmers and small business owners who supply the co-op? Check out www.doylestown.coop and head to the “Our Producers” section. A great way to meet many of the producers you’ll find at the co-op is to watch for our “Know your producer” events where they come out to shake your hand, sample their products and tell you their stories! Another way is to come on out to the 7th annual Locavore event at Superior Woodcraft on February 25th.
