‘Tis the season to be highlighting our co-op member and newest eco-system partner, Linda Croll Winokur of Linda Mittens. The mitten making business is a new venture for this retired elementary school teacher and one that is gratifying in a number of ways: the mittens truly work for keeping her own hands extra warm; they’re made from recycled wool and cashmere sweaters; and the business allows her to continue creating a joyful product using her lifelong hobby of sewing, while delighting in the color and feeling of the fabrics.
A year ago Linda took a class to learn how to make mittens and that’s how the business came into existence. Out of that one class she made a pair of mittens for herself, fueled by a desire to solve a personal problem. “My motivation for making my own mittens came from having extremely cold hands, dealing with frost bite more than once, and needing to keep my hands very warm in winter. I am pleased to say that my mittens work very well for me.”
From one pair of mittens, grew many. “My mittens were so warm and satisfying that I started making them as gifts for my family and friends. Then a friend suggested I sell them because they’re so warm and comfortable and colorful.” To be noted, the signature tag line of Linda’s Luxuriously Lined Mittens is, “Snuggly sleeping bags for your hands.” And indeed, I can personally vouch that they are.
Doing a circuit of craft shows this season, Linda comments: “I love watching people’s faces as they put their hands inside a pair of my fleece-lined mittens. They sigh and ‘oo’ and ‘ah’ with the wonderful comfort they feel.” The shows also reinforce her motivation for continuing to recycle and upcycle clothing. “It’s gratifying to see people’s eyes light up when they learn that the mittens are made from recycled sweaters.”
These mittens are to be experienced! You will have an opportunity to meet Linda and place your own hands into a pair of her “snuggly sleeping bags for your hands” during our December 4th Fun First Friday festivities from 5 – 7:30 pm. As an eco-system partner, Linda is offering a special holiday sale price of $25 for all mittens purchased by co-op members; non-members can purchase at the regular price of $28. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Doylestown Food Market. Whether for yourself, or a holiday gift for someone special, you will be oh, so satisfied!
