How can you be certain the soaps and lotions you place on your body are nontoxic and safe? Answer: When you purchase any Lotus 8 (formerly Savons de Luxe) product from the Co-op, you know you’re getting quality and pure, good for your body and good for the environment.
Renee Bergere, Owner of Lotus 8 is committed to using essential oils harvested from plants locally and around the world; never fragrances. An artist who is forever playing with smells and scents, Renee’s creativity spills out in her constantly evolving product line of soaps, Shea body butters, lip balms and scrubs. She uses local whenever she can: honey in her soap, coffee in her body scrub, and a new idea is brewing: to work with a nearby brewery in the creation of a beer soap.
Renee is passionate about raising awareness and educating consumers – especially teens – with what we put in and on our bodies. Sometimes during a craft show demonstration, Renee will have someone stand on garlic with their bare feet. “You can soon taste the garlic in your mouth. It absorbs into the cells and bloodstream and transfers throughout the body. If garlic transfers into the body, think of products with formaldehyde.”
How did the business emerge? Renee gives tremendous credit to Denise Orloff, former business owner of Eye of Newt Organics turned yoga teacher, who taught her the basics. She also knows that having her mother die of breast cancer at a relatively young age had a tremendous impact on her. “Why did she die? What types of things might she have been putting in and on her body? I became a bit obsessive with wanting to do right by my customers and right by the environment.”
A bestseller Lotus 8 product is Ice Treatment with rare blue tansy oil, great for muscle aches. In the same line of treatment oils are Breathe-Respiratory with a blend of eucalyptus and peppermint oil, great for sinus and lung conditions; and Relax-Dreams, with lavender oil. “The essential oils have so many uses. They help in little ways, like the woman who just lost her husband. The Relax product helps with grieving.”
Lotus 8 also makes are variety of soy based candles – of course, with the signature essential oils. You will have two opportunities to meet Renee, and sample her products in the store. Save the dates: Saturday, May 2, 10:30am-12:30 pm (think Mother’s Day gifts) and Thursday, May 14, 4:30 – 6:30 pm.
