Zsa's Gourmet Ice Cream: Their creatively scripted website tagline defines them perfectly: A delicious experience of classic and original handcrafted ice cream and treats. “Delicious experience” …. I would have to say, “Yes, accurate!”
I had the pleasure of speaking with Danielle Jowry, founder and co-owner of Zsa’s. I began by letting her know a Co-op colleague and I have a fondness for the same soothing activity: curled on the couch, with a favorite book in one hand, and a Zsa’s ice cream in the other. Danielle loved the imagery as it is her passion to make people’s days a little better. “We love our products and our customers and knowing when we are a special part of someone’s day.”
Danielle in turn told me two great stories. First, how the business started ten years ago as a hobby. Rummaging through her mother’s basement one day, Danielle found a basic ice cream maker left over from childhood days. She started making ice cream for home parties that immediately became a big hit and all her friends wanted to “officially” order more!
Two, how her famed ice cream truck – the truck that turned Zsa’s from hobby into a serous business - came to be. Danielle wanted a low overhead and knew the look and feel she was going for with her business – and that was to own a truck, not a store. She saw the exact truck she want on eBay and began corresponding with the seller, proposing, in her words, “a ridiculous payment plan.” Unknown to Danielle, her fiancé, Parker, was sitting on the other side of the couch also emailing the seller, advising the seller to ignore what Danielle was saying because he was going to purchase it anyway. Thus, beloved Gatsby (the name of the truck) arrived in the Spring of 2011 from Salt Lake City, and today it happily travels around the greater Philadelphia area attending parties and a variety of special events.
Zsa’s products use local ingredients whenever possible, starting with a base of grass-pastured dairy from Trickling Springs Creamery.
New seasonal flavored ice cream sandwiches arrive in July and August: Berry Crisp and Buttered Brown Sugar Peach. Yum!
