Doylestown Food Market is popular not only for what we do have, but what we don’t have. Ingredients used in the chemical processing, preservation and coloration of foods are conspicuously missing from our shelves and labels. While most foods are processed in some way, such as freezing or grinding, we strive to sell products that are as close to their natural states as possible.
Many questions remain on the health risks of genetically modifying foods. While some processes may reduce bacteria or repel crop pests, they also damage the quality of the food and create new chemical compositions with less desirable effects down the road. At Doylestown Food Market, we are careful to select non-GMO and non-irradiated products.
The other things you will find less of at Doylestown Food Market are ingredients on our labels. We think nature gets it right the first time. We don’t carry chemically processed items that give foods added flavor, color, texture or longer life. Take aspartame for example, a neurotoxin and carcinogen, which affects memory and is associated with depression, anxiety and even brain tumors. BHAs and BHTs, common preservatives in cereals, gum and even vegetable oil, are oxidants that can lead to cancer. Sulfur dioxide, now prohibited for use on fruits and vegetables by the FDA, can lead to bronchial conditions and heart disease. Sodium Sulfite, used in winemaking is also linked to breathing problems. Studies indicated that food colors may contribute to behavioral issues in children and a reduction in IQ.
We take pride in being sensitive to our customers’ sensitivities. So if you are not looking for gluten, you have come to the right place. We carry a wide range of naturally gluten-free products. Many of our vegan clientele and those allergic to dairy can choose from soy alternatives, however, there are some soy-based ingredients that you will not find on our labels. Hydrolyzed soy protein is chemically processed soy that contains unhealthy byproducts and large amounts of MSG, which is an excitotoxin that over stimulates cells. Soy protein isolate is produced from defatted soybean flakes and has been linked to allergens, brain damage and thyroid problems.
In addition to the ingredients that you won’t find, we also do our best to avoid environmentally harmful products. For example, we carry no-phosphate detergents and often reject goods that are over packaged.
Oh, but there is one thing you can find on our labels and packaging at Doylestown Food Market…a commitment to Fair Trade Certified products.
