Beauty Products... Their Hidden Ingredients

The other day, I had the privilege of sitting down with Renee Bergere, who is the owner of Lotus 8. Lotus 8 specializes in soaps, lip balms, body scrubs and Shea butters that are not only extremely luxurious, but also 100% natural. In our conversation, Renee told me about a few things that her products do not contain and to watch out for them in products that claim to be 100% natural. Renee explained to me that there are many alternatives to the chemicals and additives that are in a lot of the beauty products currently on the market. For instance, witch hazel is a natural product that can be used as a binding agent vs. polysorbate, which is a chemical binding agent commonly found in other product ingredient lists. Another simple solution is not adding synthetic dyes to create a color but using a natural ingredient such as a fruit or something that comes from the earth to create a natural color. Next, vitamin E and Grapefruit seed extract are also natural ingredients that can be substituted for harsh chemical preservatives.

Synthetic fragrances and plant-derived fragrances are also often added to beauty products but there are other natural options. Renee uses essential oils in her products to give a natural scent that is also believed to have health benefits. Germaben is another ingredient that you will commonly find in beauty products which is derived from petroleum. Petroleum has been linked to cancer in some studies so this could be a dangerous ingredient to stay away from or limit. Finally, it is important to look out for parabens, which are preservatives with weak, estrogen-like properties commonly found in lotions, shampoos, foods, and cosmetics. Most of the chemical substances that have been listed in this article are preservatives. It is very important to understand that even when you are just using beauty products, they are being absorbed into your skin. Many of these chemicals can cause a variety of illnesses, but the good thing is that they can be easily avoided. It just takes the consumer doing some homework and reading the ingredients list before buying these products.  So do your homework when looking for beauty products and try not to expose your body to these harsh ingredients when you can. This will help you not only stay healthy inside and out, but also keep our environment healthy!
