 UPDATE ON THE CO-OP

by LISA WHITE

The Doylestown Food Co-op is open and ready for you to shop! We have something new and different every day. In fact, you can now check out our updated website to:

With the help of member-owner Jennifer Conway and other supporters, we have redesigned our website to make things easier to find and make it more interactive for our members and supporters. And speaking of member-owners, we are up to 383 families who have invested in our mission.  While anyone can shop at our co-op, and we're happy when you do, it is our members who keep us strong and provide us with the capital that will allow us to fully prepare for the bounty that lies ahead.

UPCOMING EVENT - TEDx CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

by ANNE BIGGS

TEDx LogoMake it a priority to spend time with your Doylestown Food Co-op friends this Saturday at our FREE viewing party of the live-streaming webcast of TEDxManhattan’s Changing the Way We Eat. You don’t want to miss this unique opportunity to see and hear 17 speakers as well as musical performances. These presenters are experts in their fields, highly respected thought leaders representing a range of organizations and innovative approaches to how we feed ourselves, our children, our communities and millions world-wide.

Once again, we will be guests of The Standard Club for this all-day event. Refreshments will provided through special arrangement with Chipotle Restaurants. You are invited to augment this fresh feast by purchasing items prepared by Chef Justin McClain from the private dining club’s menu of locally sourced dishes. And of course, you are welcome to bring a beverage or snack.

Morning attenders, please arrive at 10:00 so you don’t interrupt the webcast’s start at 10:30am; it is expected to finish at 6:15pm. TEDxManhattan has scheduled two breaks (12:30–1:40 and 3:40–4:20) when the webcast is offline – excellent times to grab a plate of food, chat with co-op friends and family or sign up to join DFC.  Learn more about the program at our event page

FEATURED PRODUCER - Ledamete Grass Farm

by LISA WHITE

Ledamete Grass FarmLedamete Grass Farm is named as a wonderful play on words... On this organic farm, located just 43 miles away in Schnecksville, PA, the directive for the animals is to "let 'em eat"  grass. For an additional word play, one need only look to the farmer. Rob Fix, the man who is responsible for Ledamete Grass Farm with his wife, April, and family, is all about fixing. For him, organic and sustainable farming is fixing the land around him and he is completely committed to it. They farm 28 acres, but by providing only purely organic products to supplement their animals' diets, Rob estimates that he is helping to heal up to 300 acres of our earth. Read more on our blog.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT BOOK CLUB REVIEW

by CATHY MORANO

Good Morning, Beautiful BusinessOn Tuesday, February 11, our “Food for Thought” book club filled every chair our supportive, accommodating Doylestown Bookshop could find. The rest of us stood. The hook? We had a chance to meet the inspiring Judy Wicks. While the focus of her talk was her recent book, “Good Morning, Beautiful Business”, we had a wide ranging discussion about attaining healthy food, sustainability, and the power of supporting our local economy. While we always have interesting conversations, this meeting was also quite entertaining -- in addition to being an inspiring activist, entrepreneur, and pioneer, Judy Wicks is also a natural...and spunky... humorist.

Read more about February's book club meeting here.

The next meeting of the Doylestown Food Co-op’s “Food for Thought” Book Club will be on Tuesday, March 11, at 6:15 p.m. in the Doylestown Bookshop. The book we will discuss is “Farmacology: What Innovative Family Farming Can Teach Us About Health and Healing” by Daphne Miller. All are welcome. Even if you have not read the book, you will likely enjoy the conversation and community. At the Doylestown Bookshop, if you mention that you are purchasing the book for the book club, you will receive a 20% discount. Hope to see you there!

FEATURED RECIPE - RED BEANS AND RICE

submitted by REBECCA MORANO

Red Beans and RiceThis recipe is really great - one of our family's favorites. It is hearty on a cold winter's day and, with a New Orleans kind of taste, it's just right for Mardi Gras! The original recipe is from from Cook's Illustrated, January, 2010, though we made a small adjustment that we believe makes this dish perfect. Co-op Members can get the recipe here!
