 UPDATE ON THE CO-OP

by LISA WHITE

We promised that November 2013 would be a busy month!

  • We received all of the permits required to get our build out started!
  • Our volunteers have been working hard getting the bathroom and back room open and ready for plumbing changes which are now almost complete, taking down and putting up entire walls, framing doors, pulling up flooring, scraping and preparing walls, cleaning up LOTS of dust, washing a refrigerator and prep sink and more.
  • Our amazing electrician, Rich Granahan of Granahan Electrical Contractors, Inc., and his crew (aka Jimmy) are nearly done with the rough out of the wiring and ready for the first inspection. Rich deserves our strongest and most heartfelt appreciation for his donation of all of the skilled labor and materials for the electrical upgrade and installation for our co-op!

Our Semi-Annual Member meeting and pot luck dinner is scheduled for December 8th (see related article below). Please join us! At the pot luck, at the co-op, and as a member of this wonderful community.

 GIVING THANKS
A message from the BOARD PRESIDENT

As we see our store readying to open, I am so grateful to our co-op community of amazing volunteers, supporters and members.

As I started to list the many, many people I wanted to thank personally, I realized two things.  First, the list was very long!  And second, I was certain to miss people. There has been an incredible amount of work done to get us to where we are now.  Until we began our store build-out, with the exception of our Outreach Coordinator (who has put in many of her own volunteer hours), ALL of the efforts to build the infrastructure of the Doylestown Food Co-op have been done by volunteers. And there have been a lot of them! Many people have put in literally hundreds (a few people, thousands) of volunteer hours, some ongoing since the end of 2009.

HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS

Consider giving your friends or family Prepaid Gift Cards to use at the co-op! Cards are available in $20 increments and can be obtained before the store opens by contacting outreach@doylestown.coop

-OR-

Want to give a gift that lasts a lifetime? Do you have adult children or other relatives who would enjoy being members of the Doylestown Food Co-op, but have too many other priorities on their finances? Or, do you have a friend who would love to join, but can’t afford it?

Consider the "PIF" Program. The "Pay It Forward" Program gives you an opportunity to purchase a membership in the Doylestown Food Co-op as a gift. You cover the cost of the membership, and, in return, you ask the gift  recipient to make a commitment to volunteer for the Food Co-Op. By so doing, you feel good, you support the Doylestown Food Co-op, and you enable the gift recipient to become a member of a caring community with a critical mission. A win-win-win. Click here to learn how.

FEATURED PRODUCER - Doylestown Fresh
by LISA WHITE

Doylestown_Fresh.jpgDoylestown Fresh is a story of how a die-hard organic farmer devoted to permaculture and homesteading, with a desire to live off the grid, came to be the newest farmer in town, farming hydroponically (the process of growing plants in water) in a warehouse less than two miles from State and Main Street.

Dennis Riling, a Bucks County native, went into the Marine Corps in 2001, returning in 2005. He wound up, while earning a proper living at a “real job,” living and working on a farm in Pipersville. He ran roadside farm stands and believed he could do much more. He enrolled in Delaware Valley College and graduated with a degree in Horticulture and commercial crop production. Upon graduating, he began working as the Program Coordinator of the Organic Farming Certificate Program and Delaware Valley College and the Rodale Institute, initially open only to veterans and now open to everyone.

STILL DECIDING WHEN TO JOIN THE CO-OP?
by SUSAN VORWERK

We’ve got the perfect date and time!

December 8th between 5PM and 8PM at the Doylestown Presbyterian Church. Click here for more information.

"Why then?" you ask. Because that is when we are extending this one-time invitation to non-members to attend our Semi-Annual Member Meeting. Why then? Because we want you to come out for our PotLuck dinner.  Why then? Because we would love for you to be a Member on our Grand Opening Day

We would love for you to see:

  • which of your neighbors, friends, work colleagues and fellow passionate foodies are already involved in the Co-op.
  • why people are calling The Doylestown Food Co-op "The most talked about shop in Doylestown."
  • when Our Store will be open (big hint: in 20…hours, days weeks…???). You need to attend to hear the answer.
  • what products will be available in the store.
  • what the Benefits of Membership are.
  • how pleasant it is to be together as a community.

So, come along on the 8th -  meet friends -  enjoy some wonderful seasonal food (please bring along one of your favorite seasonal dishes with the recipe) and JOIN the movement and FUN! Plus, if you become a member of the Doylestown Food Co-op at the Semi-Annual Meeting, you will receive:

  • A Members Only – “Proud Supporter” of the DFC Button AND
  • 3 tickets for entry in the raffle for the VitaMix blender.

Then, have your photo taken and video recorded response to: "I joined the Co-op because…" that will be on our website, Facebook page and possibly playing on a monitor in the store. Everyone who shops in town will know that you want to help Keep Bucks Beautiful by helping our farmers preserve the land, that you want to help our community be eating healthy, locally sourced food, and that you want to keep our dollars in the community!

See you at the meeting!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT BOOK CLUB REVIEW
by CATHY MORANO Turn Here Sweet Corn

On Tuesday, November 12, the Doylestown Food Co-Op  "Food for Thought" book club met at the Doylestown Bookshop to discuss the memoir, "Turn Here Sweet Corn: Organic Farming Works" by Atina Diffley. What is this book about? A memoir of a lifetime as an organic farmer? An explanation of what it takes for a farm to be certified organic, and why it matters? A treatise on soil and on what weeds tell us about the soil? A history of food co-ops? An explanation of the truth that life is all about RELATIONSHIPS-- with the earth, with plants and animals, with families and communities? A poignant story of having no land, of having land, of losing land, and of saving land? A David and Goliath story of how one courageous, driven woman, with the support of the food co-op community, took on a corporation intent on running a pipeline through her land…..and won? All of the above!

In addition to poeticism, to insightful existential questions, to a roller coaster ride of pain and joy, of loss and redemption, the memoir provides lots of useful information about gardening and farming. Read more here.

QUOTABLE QUOTE
by CATHY MORANO

hand writing"Living in the soil are more undomesticated species than can be found aboveground on the entire planet. This soil life has simple needs: food, air, water and shelter. Just like every other species. Prevented from caring for itself, it lies at our mercy, dependent on our long-term vision and integrity."
